Do things that scare you

99-SECOND READ

'I'd rather regret the things I've done than regret the things I haven't done.'

Lucille Ball

George Addair, a speaker, businessman, author and philosopher is famous for his quote:

“Everything you’ve ever wanted is sitting on the other side of fear.”

Addair lived in North America during the 1800s, a time when fortune very much favoured the brave. Unlike today, fear was part of everyday life.

During those times people were constantly working hard in order to survive - to farm the land or earn a living. Or they were pioneering new ventures, moving across continents or fighting for land or security. They had to adapt to volatile political and economic conditions, war, famine and plague.

Not problems that the readers of this newsletter share. The cost of living crisis isn't great, but luckily for us, it isn't life-threatening.

We are fortunate to live at a time and in a place where it's relatively easy to achieve safety, comfort and stability. This may be nice, but it comes at a cost: feeling bored and unfulfilled. There is no external pressure on us to do things that are scary or to face our fears.

But if you want to have an AWESOME, CONTENT or FULFILLING life, or you want to reach your FULL POTENTIAL, you need to do things that scare you.

I've done lots of scary things in my life, from quitting a good job at 30 to travel the world and investing a significant chunk of my savings in my own life and business coach.

In fact - the scarier something is, the more you will gain from doing it. You can watch me making this point on the Purpose People Podcast below.

Here are examples of scary things I empower people to do:

  • Find Your Why in life and go after it
  • Move to a more fulfilling industry
  • Leave a company you've been at for a while
  • Learn a new craft, skill, sport or hobby
  • Do that thing you've always wanted to do
  • Take some extended time of work to travel
  • Start a business or side-hustle
  • Invest in your personal growth
  • Break a bad habit that forms part of your identity

We all usually need support to identify the actions we need to take to make us happier and to find the courage to take them.
