Do you know how you really spend your time?

99-SECOND READ

“Time is what we want the most, but what we use the worst”

William Penn – English Poet & Thinker

How do you really spend your time?

Spend 99-seconds reading this post and gain thousands of hours over the rest of your life.

You’re busy right? You don’t have enough time for all the fun, rewarding or important things. You want more time for work, relaxation, socialising, romance, hobbies etc. But I guarantee you don’t know how you really spend your time. It can be reclaimed, but until you understand where it goes, you can't get it back.

A breakdown of your time

There’s 168 hours in a week.

If you aim for the recommended 8 hours of sleep; sleeping or trying to sleep takes at least 56 hours, that 33% of the week.

At a reasonable 45 hours, working & commuting uses 40% of the remaining 112 hours.

That leaves you with 67 hours for everything else – let's call this Free Time.

Here’s some typical ways your Free Time get used up:

With up to 72% of your Free Time is spent on the above activities, you are left with 18 hours per week for everything else.

And there's still some essential things that use up this time:

-         Personal admin (finance, bills etc)

-         Home maintenance/improvement

-         Grocery shopping

-         Personal hygiene

-         Jobs & chores

-         Cleaning

Conclusion

Time is precious and we are left with very little Free Time. Through being mindful of how you spend your time, you can choose what you spend it on and how you use it.

If you want more time for fun, rewarding or important activities such as hobbies, learning, socialising, exercise, creative or charitable endeavours – you need to prioritise them.

Cut down on low value activities such as watching TV or social media – they take up more time than you think and don't contribute anything meaningful to your life. There are other, more rewarding ways to relax and spend your time. If you're working long hours or have a long commute, be brave; find a way to cut them down.

No matter how busy you are with work or other areas of your life, it's important to realise, that you can choose how you spend your time and make time for the things that matter.
