Ambition vs Satisfaction
'Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment, full effort is victory.'
Mahatma Gandhi.
Throughout my life, I wrestled with feeling content.
Not because I’m ungrateful, but because I naturally see the potential for more and feel deeply invested in growth, progress and fulfilling my potential.
To really see this clearly and address it, I had to quit my job and take a career break.
Now, I work with people who struggle with this same tension, often without fully realising it.
If you consider yourself capable, successful or ambitious, there’s a high chance you’re grappling with this too.
Maybe, as I did, you find yourself thinking:
If I feel content, will my motivation disappear? Will I achieve less?
But the truth is, feeling more content doesn’t reduce your natural drive. What it reduces is the dependence on constant progress in order to feel okay.
The reframe that helped me was this:
Living an incredible life isn’t about achieving more or cramming more in. It’s about extracting more joy, meaning and value from the life you already have.
That perspective helps me pace myself better, feel more satisfied, and show up as a calmer, fuller and more effective version of myself.
So the question is:
Do you want a life of constant progress that looks impressive on paper, or a life you genuinely enjoy living?
Because if it’s the latter, cultivating more satisfaction and slowing down just a little is probably part of the answer.
