'Talk to yourself as you would someone you love .'
Brene Brown
If you want to be feel happier or more content with any area of your life, here's one thing you can start doing today...
First, the anecdote:
The other day I was on the tennis court playing doubles, my partner, was a friendly, polite man about 20 years older than me. From the first point, every time he made a mistake he cursed under his breath, and berated himself - "you idiot", "so stupid!".
When I made mistakes he said nothing, when I played well, he praised me. Then, when it was my turn to serve, he patted me on the shoulder and said: "Now you've loosened up, you can relax and hit it". I served really well, we won the game in 3 minutes.
You see how he spoke so harshly to himself, but so warmly and supportively to me? It changed everything...
I felt good and I performed well. Meanwhile, he became more angry and frustrated and performed worse.
The lesson:
We all tend to judge ourselves more harshly and speak to ourselves less kindly than we do to others.
If you learn you speak to yourself in the same way you speak to your friends, you will immediately feel more positive, empowered and confident, you will love yourself more, and you will get better results.
In short: improve your self-talk, improve your life.
